Ancient Egyptians used it in mummification and perfume making. Thyme, which was a symbol of courage and sacrifice in ancient Greece, is used in all kinds of meat products, sauces, soups, vegetables, pickles, cheese, olives, mushroom dishes, tomato salads, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and eggplant stuffed in the kitchen today. Some species around Turkey in Van are also used as fresh "herbed cheese". Consumption in the form of tea is quite common.
